Atavist - III: Absolution

It's been 13 years since Atavist came out with their stunning sophomore effort, II: Ruined. The band reunited after a 10 year hiatus in 2016/2017, and now they are preparing to unleash an absolutely monumental doom metal album upon the world. III: Absolution is a stunner that leaves its competition in the dust. There are few bands who can turn the genres tropes into something transcendent, but Atavist are one of those bands. With four songs and just under an hour of material they leave me scraping my jaw off the floor.

There is something utterly fascinating and monumental about what Atavist have put together here. With gorgeous production and incredible sounding guitars they guide you into a deeply emotional land of fire and ice. As this record unfolds you hear all the ghosts of doom past coming out. Some as dominant influences and others just as a wind in the night. Yet through it all it's clear that Atavist have spent a lot of time digesting the genre and eventually molding into something that is their own highly triumphant epic that will leave the masses gasping for breath, in awe of the beauty that Atavist have created.

This is a masterwork. A record that helps to elevate the entire scene around it and so much more. I don't think I expected Atavist to come back this strong, but this is a huge step forward from their critically lauded mid aughties output. It's hard not to be entranced with all that has been put forward here, and while III: Absolution is certainly a dense listen it's one that welcomes you to come, take it and revel in waves of volume. This is an early contender for doom metal album of the year and one I think will stay with me for a long time to come.
