Drouth - Excerpts From A Dread Liturgy

This is a truly fascinating one. Translation Loss have been putting out interesting records for decades, and this latest offering from Drouth is truly great. This is one of the most intense black metal records that I have heard coming from the US scene in years. It's an album that eagerly dances into brilliance, that leaps from peak to peak and consistently shines as an example of what this music can be when executed at the highest possible level. Drouth bring in a huge variety of influences to craft something transcendent.

Excerpts From A Dread Liturgy is fascinating because of the bands ability to conjure up stunning imagery. The intensity of their soundscapes borders on the terrifying. Though what they are playing is clearly black metal, there are a ton of fascinating squirrelly little passages that help to make Drouth stunning. In some ways what Drouth are doing here reminds me of the Debemur Morti scene, but their execution is distinctly American. Little death metal flourishes underscore black metal howls and the searing bitterness is undeniable. Drouth aren't afraid to go outside the box either. The album opener 'A Drowning In Sunlight' for instance features an incredibly well executed guitar solo.

Drouth have reached deep into the wellspring of hate to deliver something stunning here. The bubbling ferocity and dedication to devastation is such a pleasure to sink your teeth into. Excerpts From A Dread Liturgy shines forth time and time again to remind us that Drouth are among the greats. Portland has always been a well of great music, and now we get to spend time immersing ourselves in this masterful offering. Excerpts From A Dread Liturgy is a stunner, you need to be blasting it when it drops July 31st.
