The Dutch black metal scene has really emerged in the last couple years as one of the best in the world. Adding to this canon of excellence is Verval. Their new EP, Beeldenstorm is only their second release, but it belies a level of songwriting maturity and dedication to the genre that proves these guys are lifers. With multilayered production, gorgeous arrangements and a unique take on the genre, Beeldenstorm routinely impresses and seems to continually guide towards a bolder new future for Dutch black metal.
What really gets me about this band is the simple poetry of a track like 'Een leven tussen één en nul.' While there is certainly a more conventional black metal backbone the production is strangely pretty. Yet it never really fades into post lack metal territory. Instead this is a record that builds upon black metal elements and points towards a bolder future. Beeldenstorm thrills with its broad overall conception. It is such that when the strings kick in during album open 'Vlammenzee' they seem more like a welcome addition to the end product rather than an unwieldy surprise. It speaks to just how epic this record really is.
Verval dilute an interesting variety of influences into Beeldenstorm. This is a record that pulls from a huge well of black metal sorcery in order to invoke something wholly unique. The intensity is delicious and the overarching bombast makes for an addictive listen. Weighing in at just over twenty minutes Beeldenstorm is perfect for repeat listens too. This is a dynamic piece of Dutch black metal that is going ot keep debotees of the genre interested for a good long while. Will you dive into the madness?
