Emerging from the ashes of avant garde black metallers Dodecahedron, Autarkh are a one of a kind force in the world of intelligent underground metal. Their music features heavy IDM beats alongside skronky, off kilter guitars and twisted vocals. The end result is not unlike Meshuggah, but brings so much more to the table than the djent bands of yore. Instead what we get is a thoughtful and powerful avant metal release that seamlessly fuels genres and makes for a distinct and exciting vision from a truly potent band with boundless potential.
There are a lot of interesting layers to what's going on throughout Form In Motion. The band doesn't seem too limited by any particular genre conventions and in fact seems to gladly eschew them. Of particular note, to me at least, are the atmospherics which are truly fascinating and add a real breadth to the compositions. The sonic padding on tracks like 'Cyclic Error' with its almost rapped extreme vocal delivery is really interesting and a head and shoulders beyond even the more daring contributions of Dodecahedron. It makes for the kind of thing that you can totally get immersed and lost in, then fall in love with.
Form In Motion is a delightful offering and one that I think many of us are going to be fascinated with for years to come. There is a very real breadth to the compositions and the melding of ideas, while not totally unique, is certainly very interesting and worth spending your time with. Immersing yourself in Form In Motion is a delight and it's exciting to really try to wrap your head around all that the band has accomplished on this offering. It's a masterful release and the more time I spend enjoying the madness the deeper I fall in love.
