Azziard-Vésanie

Fun fact, it hasn't really snowed in Paris for more than a year now. As a result of this I've been pulled away from the more traditional black metal of bands like Immortal and Gorgoroth. Yet now that I have Azziards new full length Vésanie to review I feel myself spiraling back into an atavistic haze. Profoundly inspired by the First World War Azziard are creating some of the most pure and unrelenting French black metal out there today, their chaotic and passionate sound is taking the hearts of thousands of purists. All must bow before the incredible triumph of a band who understand the frozen might of the winter of 1916.

One of my favorite aspects of the Azziard sound is the unrelenting rage, be it in the unforgiving blast beats, or blackened death metal riffs, there is a lot to fall in love with here. The impressive thing to consider with Vésanie is how the sound is both wonderfully brutal, yet also strangely beautiful. The chaos leads to a layered sound which contrasts the stark simplicity of the colors painted in the soundscapes of songs like Disjonction. Ah, yes, another important note, part of Azziards unique flavor comes from their French language lyrics. More than that, the unholy burble of the lead singer, A.S.A adds a touch of trve black metal to an already frostbitten record.

Vésanie shows the musical clout behind one of the most unique bands in a strong black metal scene. Azziard don't play by many of the rules and they seem to be driving forth with an attack that is inspired by one of the darkest moments of the 20th century. There are a lot of aspects to the Azziard sound that are just plain different and that's what makes them so enjoyable for me. Staying firmly within the blackened death metal genre while still exploring a lot of unique concepts and refreshing ideas this album is rewarding time and time again. For all you kvltists out there, be sure to pick up Vésanie as soon as you can!
