It's
been a minute since we've heard anything new from I, Voidhanger which
is part of what makes it so exciting to hear them back on track with
Lorn's latest - Arrayed Claws. A black metal record that
feels distinctly I,Voidhanger-esque, that is to say, esoteric and
cerebral Arrayed Claws hints at beauty in all the
wrong places and reminds us time and time again that black metal is a
genre that, while conforming to certain polemics remains wide open
and permits for just about anything to shape up in its surprisingly
lush soundworld.
Lorn
are a great example of a band who transcend the sheer simplicity of
their sound, relatively basic atmospheric keys, buzzing black metal
riffs, lots of halftime drums in order to become greater than they
are.The magic of Arrayed Claws is that it is far
more than the sum of its parts. The long form compositions and
soothing nature of the pianos balances out the sheer evil that some
of these songs reek of. It's easy to get lost in the more
overwhelming qualities of Arrayed Claws and at times
the dance between ideas and the shifting soundworlds leaves you
overwhelmed and in awe. An ambitious release to say the least, Lorn
can't help but to impress.
With
an album as dense as this one it's hard to convey all the emotions in
communicates in just a few hundred words, but I will say this - Lorn
seem tapped into something transcendent and only just starting to
reach their full potential. The searing riffs are simply the backdrop
to an antediluvian magic and an otherworld that I am only just
starting to wrap my head around after multiple listens. I have no
clue where the guys at I, Voidhanger keep finding these bands but by
GOD are they not amazing!
