Goddess - Raped Into Being

Goddess is a black metal band who, fairly obviously don't shy away from extremes. Despite the edgier-than-thou album title, this one man black metal project is singularly fascinating. Searing guitars and piercing vocals come together over a backdrop of pure fury to reflect on the true misery of existence. With lyrics focusing around animal rights, environmental stewardship and ancient mythology, Goddess paint larger than life images playing into potent archetypes we can't help but to be mesmerized by.

Featuring uncut, unedited and minimalist performances this record is an exploration in stripping back the genre to its foundation, respecting the roots of the craft and revelling in them. The massive riffing and elements of bombast are only another step in the weird and ethereal journey that this whole thing represents. The bands mastermind, Damjan Stefanovic has performed on records and live with Cradle of Filth, Soilwork, Akercocke and Antisect, and has recently gained notoriety for his experimental black metal project MRTVI. This pedigree makes sense when you consider the quality of what we've been presented with and the sheer misery he is able to communicate.

Driving forth with an almost arctic fury, Raped Into Being is a really twisted piece of work and one that you won't soon forget. It's rare to find a record that possesses this much sheer misery but is also willing to continually push the envelope and show that the band is still so much more than the sum of its parts. Over the top and almost demonic in approach you find yourself completely entranced with what Goddess has pieced together here. The crunching steps forward and vile majesty of Goddess is delightful and will leave you gasping for air.
