Blood Feast - Chopped, Sliced And Diced

Man, it's insane to think that a band like Blood Feast have been cracking New Jersey shows since 1986. That's over a course of four decades that this band has been out there kicking ass and taking names all in the glory of skullfuckingly good death metal. Manic and over the top this latest offering of re-recordings as a mini CD (I am still not sure how is this is different from an EP but whatever) entitled Chopped, Sliced and Diced is a veritable cornucopia of crazed riffs and makes for endless bloodthristy death metal-tastic fun.

It's strangely inspiring to hear a band revisit their songs from their early twenties as they deal with the bleak realities of middle age. While there are definitely a few new creative choices and a live rendition of their classic 'By The Slice' from a memorable performance in Osaka, these songs are very much a tour de force from a band who seem dedicated to melting faces wherever they may roam. Blood Feast play into all the wonderful death thrash tropes here, but this is a huge part of what makes them so valuable and such essential listening wherever you may end up. It's exciting and faster than over the top.

The straightforward and almost manic desire for blood that Blood Feast bring to the table is impressive, perhaps even more so when you realize that this same youthful passion is driving them a lifetime later. The circle pit inspiring frenzy of these songs and the clear passion for Hammer Horror gore flicks showcased throughout can't help but to make you smil. This is sick and depraved death metal, but it's self aware enough to realize that we are paying tribute to a magical moment in time that will never come again.
