Mystifier - Protogoni Mavri Magiki Dynaesteia

Primitive, punishing and over the top, Protogoni Mavri Magiki Dynaesteia is the sort of prototypical South American black metal band that speaks to the enduring power of their regions take on the genre. These Brazilian bashers have been at it since the eighties and this record shows that the band has stayed true to the maxim of 'It if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' While the band certainly has grown from their dungeon dwellling roots, the madness of Mystifier has seemed to only compound as they age.

It's weird to think that bands like this have been decimating our eardrums for thirty years now. There is a sort of maddening assault on these tracks, it speaks to the enduring power of black metal and the power it has held for so long. The band continues to stay focused on anti-religious themes and steep their lyrics in the occult. There isn't anything here that is especially going to blow your mind but it all taps into a sound that is and always will be unholy. There is a fascinating power to the work here and the grandiose nature of tracks like Weighing Heart Ceremony speaks to all that Mystifier have been able to accomplish.

Protogoni Mavri Magiki Dynaesteia is a wonderful listen, ten tracks of atavistic black metal with a clear musical direction. They aren't trying to impress anyone with this nor are they attempting to suggest that they are changing the world. Rather what they are doing is speaking to the enduring mystery of this music and why we all love it. Monochromatic soundscapes counteracted by primitive guitars hint at blazes in the southern sky. Brazilian black metal for the masses, hatred of religion for the master plan - Protogoni Mavri Magiki Dynaesteia will keep you coming back for more.
