Overt Enemy - Possession

Modern thrash metal is just so addictive. Its fast, over the top and really just a testament to all that the genre was supposed to be about in the first place. Possession is the latest offering from thrashers Overt Enemy and it ties directly into all these tropes and more. Their straightforward sound makes it a must-listen for any fan of thrashy death metal, and though there aren't really any surprises, surprises aren't really the point of this release. Instead you're left with five tracks that will have you headbanging until your neck snaps.

Possession fascinated simply because of its ability to moderate between mid tempo thrash and more straight balls out moments. Take a track like At Dawn they Sleep with its thrilling cry of 'KILL!' on the bridge. Sure it plays into a lot of tropes and feels a little sill,y but that's kind of the point. You're not listening to a band called Overt Enemy because you think they are going to write about sunshine, rainbows and broken hearts. This is music that inspires circle pits and gets bodies moving. The tight songwriting is only a further testament to the modus operandi of the band. It makes for addictive and in your face listening.

This all being said - I think that Overt Enemy are definitely a very solid and potent groovy thrash metal band. Would I like to see their songs be shorter? Yes, but to be fair I feel this way about almost every thrash metal band. There are a ton of exciting riffs here and they don't revert into any staid 'dad thrash' stereotypes that have made the genre a parody of itself in recent years. As is this is some wonderfully intense heavy metal madness that is going to get you screaming for your lost sanity. Dig in.
