Krv - Krv

I don't think in the thousands of reviews I've written that I've ever been given  a record in English, French AND Serbian before! Yet that is only one thing that makes this new black metal project, Krv, so special. The band is essentially a Ddent side project featuring two members of that post-doom group, but it also is so much more. This is a record that really captures the magic of the black metal scene right now, balancing both the airy fairy frills with a clear dedication to some of the more orthodox elements of the genre.

There is a simple elegance to this record that makes it strangely addictive. The band have a deep understanding of black metal tropes, but they go beyond. Still there is something to be said for the doomed march of a track like 'Motherless Abyss' and the nihilistic simplicity of lyrics such as, 'You are consumed, by the black plague!' Yes they may not be reinventing the steel but the are unleashing insanity. Beyond that though this is a very layered and interesting release. In some ways it reminds me of a band like Der Weg Einer Freiheit in their ability to cast disparate elements onto a fairly extreme black metal backdrop - hell there are even moments of industrial music here!

Krv is a masterful release - it's a record that sees the band go over the top and continue to unleash their unique brand of raw rock fury time and time again. The assault of a track like Forlorn is wonderfully ominous. It makes the moments of transcendence all the more beautiful. It's easy to get lost in the fiercest imagery and storming drums - but that is the point. This is a band who invite you to take a step over the edge, to fall into the pit and realize that we are all doomed to destroy and destined to die.
