Monolith - The Lord Conspirator

The South African death metal scene is an interesting one. It is perhaps the most isolated death metal scene in the world with the fewest international bands coming through. The population is low enough that it's not like there are a ton of other markets to tour through either. This is part of what I find the scene fascinating. It gives bands like Monolith a unique spin and gives their new record The Lord Conspirator a flair that is wholly its own. What more could someone want out of a death metal band after al?

The Lord Conspirator fascinates because of the sheer wall of sound, the neverending death metal torment that the band so gleefully unveils. The sense of misery communicated via a track like 'The Profound Wells Of Fire' is distinctly palpable. Their HM2 driven approach ensures that the music remains wonderfully brutal. That being said - some of the melodic moments are the most triumphant. Mellodic swells come together on nearly every track on The Lord Conspirator in order to assure that this is an epic listen that will never leave you bored. The torrential riffage though makes for a unique experience one won't soon give up.

It's easy to get lost in the magic of this record. The flashy runs on a track like 'Saturn' are a fitting undercurrent to moments of true death metal ecstasy. The bands first full length comes five years after their debut EP, and four years after their most recent release. It's clear that a lot of time was spent in crafting The Lord Conspirator and affirming that this record was the best that it could possibly be. It's easy to get lost in all that it offers and realize that it will only get bleaker, and better, from here on out.
