Dearth - To Crown All Befoulment

This is one of the outright heaviest releases that I have heard all year. Billing themselves as 'Suffocating death metal' on their Facebook page I can honestly find no better way to describe what Dearth are doing. This is a band who understand the bitter pill of reality and unveil their misery with some of the most crushing death metal that I have heard all year. It makes for moshworthy madness and sees Dearth's To Crown All Befoulment easily take its place as one of the best death metal debuts of the year.

There is so much to be entranced by with what Dearth are doing here, but it's really just the 'beat you over the head' brutality of what they are doing that makes the band so exciting to me. There is a suffocating breadth to what they are doing here and the more time I spend writhing in the murk with them the more I have come to realize that Dearth are one of a kind, masters of their craft. These are the dudes who can generate some evil fucking riffs. They are bringing the genre to the next level with the brilliant blinding madness of what they have conjured up here. This is a record that borders on the terrifying, but that's why we love it.

To Crown All Befoulment is a testament to what makes blackened death metal so great. Listening to this record is like getting hit with a ton of bricks. It's colossal. To try to navigate through the dense sonic oppression they have conjured up here is basically impossible. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then this isn't for you. But for those of us in love with bands like Dead Congregation and Pseudogod there is something magical here. Dearth will crack your skull open, what more can a metalhead want?
