Woah - this is a crazy one. Industrial metal has taken a lot of interesting turns in recent years. The long shadow of bands like Godflesh and Nine Inch Nails has finally started to be re-interpreted to perfection. I also don't think it would be a stretch to say the industrial ministrations of bands like Code Orange probably helped this along too. The point being, 20 Buck Spin's entrants in the industrial metal arms race are Black Magnet. This incredibly talented group have a new album, Hallucination Scene, and it is a veritable monster. This is what the darkest and most demented industrial metal was supposed to be about in the first place.
Black Magnet may only be just debuting, but there is a very impressive maturity behind this record. These tracks are potent, full of all sorts of exciting frills and a devilish reminder of just how twisted this music can be. There is simply so much to unpack within Hallucination Scene and it routinely feels that within each layer is nested even more industrial goodness. The devastating cry of 'No One Save Me!' that is repeated in the outro of 'Divination Equipment' perfectly foreshadows the rest of the album. It's twisted and dark but it's also going through a very personal pain and is unafraid to share that. In many ways this is a very brave release.
Hallucination Scene is a rager. It's epic and powerful. The crunchy guitars and terrifying sample evoke apocalyptic imagery and seem to continually drive towards despairing new futures. Few records reflect the tormented reality of Hallucination Scene and the deeper one delves the more clear it becomes that this band are incredibly potent and one of a kind. This is what extreme metal was always meant to be about, and Black Magnet's demented take on it is addictive. Will you be joining their heart wrenching salvo?
