I was really impressed with Cultus Profanos debut LP, Sacramentum Obscurus back in 2018. Now they return with a significant step forward with Accursed Possession. Months on the road and ever improving songwriting make this a compelling offering. The twisted burning wreckage that they unveil on this album is truly impressive. There is a twisted unreality here that helps to make this a wonderfully maddening offering. Full of blazes in the northern sky, but also distinct and iconoclastic frills, Cultus Profano have beat their own unique path in the underground.
The blazing guitars form a nice counterpoint to a drum performance that often eschews the blast beat frenzy of many of the bands peers. Instead what you get here is something significantly more emotional, stripped back and a delight to throw yourself into. The band have found a way here to show us a deeply personal side whilst maintaining the swagger and pomp necessary for this type of black metal to really shine. There is a wonderful sense of bombast to Accursed Possession and the more time I spend reveling in the murk, the more clear its ultimate triumph becomes to me. This is the sort of madness black metal was meant to be about.
Accursed Possession sees Cultus Profano at their finest, well produced, executing at a high level and continually managing to impress with what they do. There is a wonderful sense of inherent drama here, but also a sense that the band is tapped into something deeper. The inherent insanity and the breadth of emotion communicated on a track like 'Devoted To The Black Horns' is thrilling and really speaks to just how good this band is. If you're looking for a record that really builds on the magic of black metal second wave, this is the perfect thing to pull you into the pit.
