This is the one - the make it or break it moment. It's hard being a much talked about band on your third album. People use this album as a time to decide if they really want to follow your band long term. You are in a make it or break it position. Such was the struggle of Uada going into the release of Djinn. Fortunately, it seems that they have only built on their past promise to ensure a truly thrilling and potent black metal record that will leave the twisted masses in awe of the unholy magic that they have managed to conjure up.
These Portland black metallers are the rare example of a US band who have been able to find their own place within the global black metal scene and leave people in awe. Their execution has bordered on flawless and this new offering is a complete stunner. It's many steps ahead of past work, bringing in progressive elements and even a fair amount of what sounds like Iron Maiden worship. Uada still bring the rock and roll frills, but now it's couched in something even grander. They have found a way to balance the disparate elements that define their sound and leave listeners scraping their collective jaws off the floor in awe.
There is something wonderfully twisted about what's going on with Djinn. It's a record that seethes and writhes, that conjures up old magic and new. It's an offering to the old gods but done in a wholly new way. There are layers upon layers, but much of the bands message can be communicated on the first listen. Uada have done it again, continued to prove that they are among the modern black metal greats and their unique take on the genre is going to continue to fascinate for years to come. Prepare yourself for the arch-slaughter.
