I have been deep down the Swedish punk/d-beat/crust rabbit hole lately, which makes it wonderfully fitting that I would get a promo from Ett Dödens Maskineri, a band who specialize in the genre. Their approach to the music is abrasive and yet weirdly grandiose. While the songs on Det Svenska Hatet are certainly brutal, they also embrace a sense of the epic that puts them in a league of their own. This makes for some truly fascinating and exciting listening from a band building on a grand tradition of punk rock.
The appeal of Det Svenska Hatet really is within this ability to fuse the grandiose and the more down to earth. The band has crafted something here that is truly potent. Yes they clearly understand their punk bonafides and have a lot of respect for the Malmo scene for instance, but they also clearly enjoy a lot more music. There are moments here that ismply feel epic and it suggests a step forward for the band that is truly thrilling. The arrangements here are on point and too hear a band executing like this is not something that happens enough. You've got to love a band who lean into the madness with this much glee.
Det Svenska Hatet is a record you absolutely want to get lost in. While it may not have the balls to the wall aggression of their peers in a band like Skam, it has something else - a bombast that few of their peers can match. The magic though is that they maintain this bombast whilst staying abrasive, evil and gloriously over the top. There is a vile punk rock calculus going on behind the scenes of Det Svenska Hatet and it really is a pleasure to turn this record up and revel in what Ett Dödens Maskineri have accomplished!
