There is so much good Dutch black metal coming out right now and Grafjammer proudly add to the scene. Coming in slow with the ominous crush of De Zoute Kwel it rapidly becomes clear, Grafjammer are fucking pissed. This is twisted black metal at its finest. Grandiose enough to impress but with enough of the early 90s hate that the music still feels dangerous and we are forced to remember how wonderfully demented this music is. It's a tricky balance to strike, but Grafjammer hit upon it perfectly and can't help but to impress.
De Zoute Kwel is an impressive offering. There is a breadth to the production that one might not expect from this type of black metal. In particular the rumbling bass seems to have a particularly interesting role in the bands songwriting. Their execution is solid throughout, despite a few small hiccups here and there. What I find is that once Grafjammer get into the full bore screaming hatred of it all though things start to become truly special. The fierce delivery of some of these tracks is delectable and it speaks to just how talented the band members are. They conjure up monumental waves of sound and spit madness. It's a wonderfully intense experience.
Grafjammer are doing a solid take on second wave black metal and it's definitely enjoyable to dig into their music. There are some clear highlights, especially with regards to the melodic content. There is a glorious ferocity to this record and it is enough to overcome even some of the weaker songwriting choices. De Zoute Kwel is a potent addition to a glorious Dutch black metal scene and it leaves me curious to see how the band moves forward. This is a strong third offering from these rapid fire blasphemers and it's thrilling to think what's to come!
