Scour has been fascinating black metal fans for a few years now. The Phil Anselmo led project unites him with such noteworthy friends as John Jarvis (Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Derek Engemann (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), and Adam Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Lock Up). The record also features guest appearances from folks like Erik Rutan, Pat O'Brien and weirdly enough, Jason Momoa. Seriously - think about that. A major movie star now has a guest appearance on a black metal record.
All this being said - Scour have always been a great band but this record seems like a significant step up for them. There is a level of intensity, of tight playing that really helps to make this a thrilling listen. In particular - Adam Jarvis's drumming on tracks like 'Flames' is absolutely stunning and really speaks to the bands ability to conjure up moments of black metal hell rock and roll. There is a devastating crush to The Black EP that makes it a truly twisted offering, a step above its contemporaries and a fitting reminder of just how good these guys all are. The songs here are wonderfully composed, paying excellent tribute to the second wave of black metal and demonstrating a lot of versatility.
My biggest complaint about The Black EP is just how short it is - I want more - so much more! Scour have crafted something here that is truly potent. They even have a foray into dungeon synth with the masterful interlude, 'Microbes' - certainly an appropriate track name for 2020. Blasting, twisted and featuring one of the best black metal 'Blech's' that I've heard in a long time, The Black EP is a sort of taking of the throne. Phil Anselmo has definitely proved that he can create some of the best black metal around - and it's wonderfully nightmarish.
