Few bands are as productive or forward thinking as Tombs. Since their inception in 2007 the band has released five albums, four EP's and a pair of splits. They've reinvented themselves multiple times. They are constantly expanding the boundaries of what they can be. The vision for the band remains impressive and exciting. It perpetually hints towards stark new futures that speak to the enduring power of both this band, and its project mastermind, Mike Hill. There's a reason Tombs are among the kings USBM, and Under Sullen Skies is proof as to why.
What's important to understand about this album is that it is yet another expansion of the Tombs sound. While the bands core black metal elements are here, expect to be enthralled by moments of doom and death metal. It ends up leading to one of Tombs most immersive offerings to date. There is a breadth to Under Sullen Skies that serves to make it a really exciting offering that continually seems to up its game and hint at darker new futures for the band. As a general rule the execution has improved too. Frontman Mike Hill's vocals have been expanding and improving for years now, Under Sullen Skies features some of this most vicious work to date in that regard.
Under Sullen Skies is a masterful goddamn offering. It has endless layers of twisted triumph and continually reminds listeners just how exciting this music can be. Tombs have gone above and beyond here to craft a record that is impressive and food for the soul. You'll find yourself drowning in triumphant volume as you wend your way through the terror within this album. Under Sullen Skies is a masterful offering from a masterful band. To say otherwise would be remiss. This is the next phase of Tomb's USBM triumph - buy it.
