Aethyrick - Apotheosis

  

Aethyrick are a Finnish black metal band in the grand old style. They have been remarkably productive over the pandemic. Earlier this year they dropped their sophomore album Gnosis. Now they are gearing up to release Apotheosis in January. It promises to be a unique and exciting offering. The bands grasp on melodicism has dramatically expanded and the performances throughout this record will leave listeners in awe. Apotheosis is an album that continually hints at grander and bolder future for these black metal traditionalists and it's a pleasure to get lost in. 

Of particular note on Apotheosis I think is the bass playing. The melodic lines that decorate tracks like 'With Determined Steps' really speak to how special these guys are. Their sound is defined by triumphant offerings such as these, exulting in their own twisted blasphemy and routinely reminding us just how talented Aethyrick are. The band may not be breaking new ground, but they prove consistently that they are among the best at executing upon the genres many tropes. One gets a a sense of the endless blizzards that helped shape this record and the internal suffering that gives it fire. Apotheosis is masterful in its execution - the type of thing its a delight to get lost in. 

There is a meditative and strangely triumphant magic to Apotheosis. It's the sound of a band who were forced to confront the misery of the pandemic but managed to come out on top. It's a band that faced a momentous trial and come through all the better for it. This is a mystical and fascinating offering. A record that is a pleasure to get lost in. For those of us who remain loyal it is a rare gift. I'm eager for all the projects being released post covid but I get the sense that this may well be one of the best to emerge from the plague.
