2020 has been a difficult year, but at least we have splits like this one to guide us through. In many ways a split between Japans legendary Coffins and the almighty Depression out of Germany is basically wish fulfillment. It's a wonderful way to see two of our favorite old school death metal bands coming together to unleash something truly devastating and exciting. It's death metal done with a brain scrambling and head crunching approach. It's a split that will leave death metal addicts satisfied, and others scratching their heads.
Coffins kick off their side of the split with all their fierce thumping energy. The pummeling magic of these tracks is delicious. The underproduced drums on a track like 'Born From Fear' are actually a key part of what makes this record so much fun. It shows the Japanese death metallers executing in the fucked up old style. And it rules. As for Depression, well they just build up on the skull cracking approach that has served them so well over the years. The highlight of their side of the split, "One Last Smile" blazes forth at a million miles an hour and will leave you chewing up, and then spitting out your own tongue. It's gloriously brutarian and over the top.
In other words - this is a death metallers death metal split. The ideas are primitive and the approach old school. It's rare to have a pair of bands who so eagerly delve into their collective pasts as these guys do, but it's a big part of what helps to make for such compelling listening. Coffins and Depression build on what they do best and what they have always done best. It's just our pleasure as listeners to get to sink our teeth into the bizarro madness of it all. This is a tormented and vile split that will keep all enthralled. Prepare to be sucked into the pit!
