Mere months after the release of their critically acclaimed collaborative debut. Thou and Emma Ruth Rundle are preparing for another collaboration, this time an EP entitled The Helm Of Sorrow. These tracks come as a sort of bonus to the full length the artists did together, May Our Chambers Be Full. For those who were enamored with that work, then these b-sides feel like a significant addition to that amazing work pointing at a bolder future and giving hope for listeners across the globe that the best may be yet to come from these heavy music masters.
One of the highlights of the record is, weirdly enough, their cover of The Cranberries "Hollywood" which sees Emma Ruth Rundles haunting voice dipping and diving, showcasing strange new sides to a song that many of us know intimately. Meanwhile, the execution of tracks like album opener "Orphan Limbs" is fascinating. It sees the performers nicely playing off each other, with the trademark screams of Thou frontman Brian Funck coming in and acting as a fitting contrast to the beautiful vocalizations of Emma Ruth Rundle. The dueted vocals on a track like "Crone Dance" are exciting too and point to all the directions this project could go.
May Our Chambers Be Full consistently impresses with the breadth and scope of the offering. The bands ability to conjure up dark new futures and Emma Ruth Rundles willingness to weave in gorgeous layers of sounds makes for a compelling effort. May Our Chambers Be Full may only be a collection of b-sides but the offerings within are powerful and exciting. It's the sort of album we can lose ourselves in and which reminds us time and time again of the magic of these two artists. When they collaborate they become something greater though and that can't help but to transcend.
