Black TarPoon - The Thad EP

Now this is an interesting one. The Thad EP is the latest from the dark acoustic country rock group Black TarPoon. With a sound that pulls upon the dark roots of American music with country frills and tasteful guitar playing, this three song offering may be stripped back but it is a delight to get lost in - a real testament ot the ongoing skill of those involved and a fascinating offering that is going to keep you coming back in awe. Black TarPoon have built some mystical and emotionally powerful here that you can't help but to get lost in. 

The Thad EP is exciting for the sheer humanity that it communicates. Tracks like 'Gloom' portray a very real and relatable darkness. The use of multiple vocalists exploring different registers and styles is great too. This ranges from a redneck squawk to a more conventional full throated country singer performance and the way these interlock is a delight. The album closer, 'He Sleeps With The Fishes' is the real rocker here, a sort of twisted murder ballad. The diverse elements that define this record like a washboard and overarching sense of South Texas grit really serve to make a record that reflects its surroundings and leaves listeners curious for more. 

I'm very excited to hear the bands upcoming full length, but for now I'll have to content myself with this and the groups rich back catalog of dark country that reflects the suffering of a country that has seen itself torn apart over the past year. Passionate and full of down home magic, The Thad EP is as real as it gets, a meaningful and fascinating offering that leaves listeners curious for more and thrilled with the sublime poetry of this music. Join me in sinking your teeth into this thoughtful and potent three track EP, it's a real treat.
