Towards Atlantis Lights - When The Ashes Devoured The Sun

There is simply so much good death doom happening these days that it's hard not to get excited about the genre. We are living through a veritable golden age for the stuff and it's such a delight to hear bands really building on these classic sounds. One of the latest exciting additions to the canon is When The Ashes Devoured The Sun by the one and only Towards Atlantis Lights. This quasi supergroup features members of Aphonic Threnody, Pantheist and Void Of Silence, so you know that you're going to get something potent.

This is a monster of a record, clearly blending in elements from members other groups into something larger than life and monumental. Towards Atlantis Lights are by no means attempting to reinvent the steel. Instead they are just building on classic death doom tropes that so many of us have fallen in love with. It's exactly the sort of thing that is sure to mesmerize listeners and leave one in awe as they unveil the boundless power of this music. The crushing melodies on a track like 'The Minoan Tragedy' are incredibly powerful. It leans into the bands distinct and exciting sensibility and the way that they are really able to conjure up the gloomiest of emotions.

When The Ashes Devoured The Sun is a death doom record that speaks to the ongoing power of the genre. Towards Atlantis Lights build on their other projects with this record to craft something potent. Reminiscent of acts like Evoken, there are a ton of layers that devout fans of this music are going to be entranced by. There is so much wonderful heaviness to pick apart here and the deeper I go the more I learn. Unpack the layers of sorrow and you'll start to find some gleaming transcendence. It's really a delight to be immersed.
