Necronautical - Slain In The Spirit

 

Necronautical are a veritable black metal force. Coming out on the legendary Candelight Records how could they not be? Slain In The Spirit is a masterful offering in terms of the breadth of execution and the vision behind the music. Their unique brand of quasi symphonic black metal has quickly seen them become one of the premier black metal forces in England and the rage that they craft their new record Slain In the spirit with really speaks to their capabilities as musicians. This is a black metal record executed at a very high level and with nods to all sides of the genre.

There is a very real bombast to the compositions here. It's not just the synths that give it this larger than life aesthetic, but the little things too, like the use of a bell on 'Necropsychonautics' which tolls a doomed dirge underneath ferocious black beats and unrelenting rhythms. Slain In The Spirit will consistently capture the imagination of listeners and the scope behind it is truly exciting. To immerse yourself in its darkness is to drink from the night itself. It's hard not to be enamored with the monochromatic melodies that sculpt tracks like 'Contorting In Perpetuity'. It's exactly the sort of stuff that made so many of us fall in love with the genre in the first place. 

While Necronautical might not be reinventing the genre they do a good job building on classic tropes and keep the record full of surprises. The use of synths remains tasteful and they pull a few nifty ideas out of their collective sleeve. For underground devotees, Necronautical's highly polished and refined sound is the sort of thing that will go on repeat. This is very much a band who are set up for the big stages at all of Europes finest festivals and who will be sure to be laying waste to many of these audiences in the near future.
