Orphique - Consécration Cadavérique

Consecration Cadaverique is the stunning new full length from Quebecois black metal masters Orphique. While the Quebec scene has always been a fertile place for the most evil of music, it feels like this scene has spat out something fresh with Orphique. While Consecration Cadaverique certainly pays heed to many of the same tropes as the rest of the genre, there is something special about this record, from its mythic feeling cover art to the larger than life presentation of the music. It's the sort of thing that you find yourself getting completely lost in.

Orphique is a thrilling band for a few reasons, but I think that the dynamics of the record are perhaps the best illustrator of what makes them different. Tracks like "Chromatique" with its dark minor chord acoustic passages uses these moments as a sort of reprieve from the blasting ferocity of so much of the album. Simultaneously, there is something symphonic about many of the offerings. It's easy to get swept away in the arrangements and the way that the record unfolds for earnest listeners, willing to invest time in what is oftentimes a monumental offering, a record that captures the imagination and leaves all those around them in awe.

Suffice it to say - the Quebec metal scene has done it again. This band is clearly the culmination of a lot of hard work and immersing yourself in it is also immersing yourself in one of the worlds most exciting underground communities. There is a very real and omnipresent darkness to this record that I find addictive and has me coming back time and time again. These songs are wondrously written and immaculate in their conception. Letting yourself get lost in their dark waves of sound is a delight that speaks to the bands growing power of our souls.
