Back to R'yleh

Back to R'yleh is a bizarre prog band. Their varied sound creates a bizarre listening experience. The guitars are pretty excellent, the bass is solid and the drums unsteady. Finally the vocals are simply psychedelic. The guitar work is made up of a variety of styles, ranging from metal, to punk to blues, often within the course of one song. This jumble is at once pleasing and ugly. The final effect makes the band seem confused, yet at the same time very well put together. As I said, it's bizarre. The bass work is pretty great, theirs a lot of walking lines that go independently from the guitar work, allowing for a layered sound. The drumming is crazy and wild, it is as if the drummer can not decide on a speed to go. Yet this too makes the band seem even more ridiculous and beautiful. Finally we have the vocals, a mixture of cleans and death growls/grunts adds yet another layer to the insanity. In conclusion, this unlikely combination of styles creates a sound unlike any you have heard before... so yeah.. go check them out!

  1. I'm pretty sure the name of the band is spelled "Back to R'lyeh" instead of "Back to R'yleh". That's a reference from H.P. Lovecraft's "The call of Cthulhu"
