The Gates of Slumber-...The Awakening

The Gates of Slumber - ...the Awakening

The Gates of Slumber are a wonderful doom metal band with an incredibly powerful sound oftentimes reminiscent of Saint Vitus or even Black Sabbath. The raw power of these riffs is almost orgasmic, they have a vibrant energy to them, their slow nature crowning them in evil. This is a band who understand how to make doom metal, and considering they've been around since 1998 they've certainly had the time to practice. Today I'm reviewing their classic debut record ... The Awakening a record that showed the world for the first time the crushing lack of speed that would define The Gates Of Slumber's music.

This record absolutely reeks of doomy Black Sabbath. Obviously, this is a good thing. Especially when you consider that the band has been able to add more than a few of their own touches to the music. The end result is an album filled with dramatic build ups and epic explosions of sound, all deliver at around 60 beats per minute. What's truly amazing about ...The Awakening is that these tracks are heavy enough to make the listener squirm as they try to escape the slow and certain onslaught of the bands bass filled trudge. It swallows up the listener and forces them into a world of doom metal that provides no way out.

So, if you're looking for wonderfully destructive Saint Vitus flavored doom metal then The Gates of Slumber is the band for you. Their music is slow and unforgiving, it will pummel your eardrums into submission and force you to acknowledge the dominance of The Gates of Slumber. Filled with unholy howls and fantastic guitar parts ...The Awakening is not to be missed. Add a huge bottom end to the mix and you've got yourself a doom metal record for the ages. Suffice to say, ...The Awakening is a doom classic and I'm very much looking forward to seeing The Gates of Slumber this summer on their European tour!
