Napalm Christ, now there is a good band name, and furthermore, a generally great band. Napalm Christ are here to take your head. Their music is a unique type of grind derived blackened doom metal with a sludgy attack that is completely unforgiving and gloriously passionate. The kind of music that crushes children to death in their sleep Napalm Christ's new demo properly titled 2013 Demo is a record that showcases one of the most exciting and interesting groups to come up in the fringe black metal scene in recent years. A record that can do it all, it's easy to fall in love with Napalm Christ.
One of the most interesting aspects of the way it intertwines the doom with the black metal, going between thudding and crushing riffs and more blazing black metal parts. One great example of this is on the track Life Is Dimming which takes most of its musical might from the roaring time changes. The songwriting as a whole is very powerful and the longer songs, like Reclaimed By the Earth never leave the listener bored. Instead they open up sweeping new vistas of heavy metal magic. One thing to note is that in my opinion, the low production quality actually adds to the music. The songs would not be the same without the barely produced crunch that these tracks seem to revel in.
To finish, 2013 Demo is an album that will grasp your heart strings, simply because it reeks of so much metal might. Sure it might alienate the untrve, non-pvrists who do not seek redemption through annihilation but that is part of what makes it so good. This record is harsh, unforgiving, and proud of it. An album for the ages, one that stands up and says 'I don't care what you think, I'm doing it my way' and it pulls it off with aplomb. In short, for all you blackened doom freaks, this is going to be a great day. Napalm Christ is a band who understand the genre on a fundamental level and their demo is just a perfect example thereof.
