Second to Sun-Based on a True Story

Based On A True Story cover art

Djent is not dead, it has merely evolved and become greater and more powerful. Second to Sun is one of the bands that proves that. Their unique brand of instrumetal (yes, instrumetal) fuses a variety of metal sounds to get something that is magical, powerful, and disgustingly heavy. The kind of band who drive you mad with their beautiful heavy metal attack Second to Sun are one of those bands who will simply overpower you with a sound that is so polished and refined that you just can't complain. Any fan of progressive metal will be easily enamored with the musical mastery of Based on a True Story.

One of the first things that will strike you about Based on a True Story is the unique rhythmic patterns. They are not djent exactly, they fuse a variety of styles to get a unique guitar approach that will stay in your head for months on end. This allows Second to Sun to create soundscapes of a sort that have never been heard before. Simply put, the way the black metal elements inflect on the more deathcore/hardcore parts is incredible. No other band really does this (asides from Vektors, kinda) and Second to Son seem to have a pretty good handle on it. Based on a True Story has a clearly defined musical direction and while the sound has yet reach its full potential its still pretty darn good.

In conclusion, Based on a True Story is the kind of record that shows a bright future for heavy metal. Russia has long been producing some very exciting and powerful metal bands and Second to Sun is one of the next in this proud tradition. Innovative and explosive the future seems very bright for one of the most unique instrumental bands out there Rather than embracing jazz frills these guys go for pure metal madness and they come out most successfully indeed. I can't wait to hear more from these progressive metal masters, Second to Sun is coming for you!
