Shroud of Despondency is an extreme metal band Milwaukee who have an incredible and unapologetic sound that goes from a black metal base to create vast and powerful soundscapes. And while the bands previous two records were powerful tributes to the glory of black metal, this one has a much broader scope. Their new double album Tied to a Dying Animal shows the incredible diversity of this band. Its frequently hard to believe you're listening to the same band. With these twenty one tracks Shroud of Despondency have taken it all on.
The magic of Shroud of Despondency lies in their sheer talent. The way that they mix together melodic lead lines, blazing guitar parts, beautiful harmonies with vocals torn from the pits of hell. The second disc on this double album is more turned towards acoustic parts and depressive vibes. This helps to give the record more depth and further evidences the songwriting skill of this band. Remember, on this record their are twenty tracks, and one bonus percussion sample. This is not something to be taken lightly, or even listened to all the way through as I foolishly did yesterday. Tied to a Dying Animal is best digested in parts, fully allowing the listener to embrace the glory of the record.
In closing, Tied to a Dying Animal is a black metal monolith, a testament to an undying and roaring power of the genre. Yet there is so much more to be had here. The screeching power of this band is not something that you're going to want to ignore. Shroud of Despondency have managed to unite many genres, and not exclusively metal ones under one flag, this is the band who might take over the world. Brainy and powerful I am curious as to how they are going to develop in the next few years. This is their Reign In Blood and should bring the band to a new level of hateful triumph.
