Now this is what death metal is supposed to sound like. I hit a bit of a rough patch earlier today with moving and all that, but now Hate Division have grabbed me by the hair and pulled me out of the ditch I dug for myself. Suddenly enslaved to death metal I must raise my fist in honor of the band who gored me back to life. Hate Divisions new record Order of the Enslaved is the sort of death metal release that shocks you back into remembering why you loved death metal so much in the first place, and by god, is it triumphant, with blazing riffs and a colossal attack, Hate Division get death metal.
Simply put, the blaring and buzzing guitar lines on songs like The Divine Reward provide a strange and all encompassing attraction to the record. There is a lot of groove here too, in fact, some songs on Order of the Enslaved remind me quite a bit of Deathklok. There is a beautiful primitive aggression behind this release, it sort of taps into something very primal and very human, something that is found within all of us. In other words, Order of the Enslaved could have a much broader appeal, beyond the standard metal crowd, not because it is lighter, but simply more relatable. That being said, there actually are some softer moments that prove the diverse talent of the band, and this too helps to make Hate Division more engaging.
In conclusion, Hate Division may very well redeem Canada from birthing Nickelback. (But maybe not Justin Bieber, not yet at least) Their chugs get brutal, the growls distinctly evil, and the blast beats utterly mind warping. Order of the Enslaved has in a mere four listens not only become one of my favorite death metal records of 2014 so far, but also produced on of my favorite death metal songs of the year with the album closer, also titled Order of the Enslaved. This release is not for the faint of heart, yet it could very well give you the encouragement and strength you need to make it through another mediocre day of the nine to five, it certainly has helped me.
