I review a lot of doom metal, but you know what? There's a lot of good doom metal coming out these days, so let's all profit! Ancient Altar are the kind of band who have a sort of unholy groove that forces them forward. As with many of the other best bands in the genre, they're not really held together by anything other than sheer empathy. The moving bass lines on tracks like Ek Balam speak to the power of the band, and their new release appropriately titled Ancient Altar. Finding yourself in the atavistic glory of Ancient Altar is like opening your heart to a brave new world, it is far too enjoyable, yet just a little bit frightening. These guys have a very real darkness to their sound, but I personally feel like it is ultimately for the better, allowing us to come more to terms with the dark within ourselves. Otherwise, what more have I got to say other than let this record swallow you up, kneel at the forgotten altar that the band have created and realize that these guys have a lot more where this came from!
