There is something distinctly appealing about bombastic and hard hitting death metal. Sure it isn't always meant to be taken seriously, but what a trip it can be on days when you're feeling down and out. Exordium Mors have crafted something exciting and truly interesting with their new record The Apotheosis of Death, it's a brainy death metal recording that, while it may not challenge the listener, certainly gives them something to chew on. Groove oriented and unafraid of cracking skulls, Exordium Mors are one of the most exciting bands to come out of the New Zealand scene in a good long time.
I think a large part of what makes this record so interesting for me is the bold melodic lines that make their presence clearly felt throughout the album. While they often start out subtly their are some very clear melodic ideas that are allowed to throb over top of the riffs. This gives the music a strange sense of 'hookiness'. Latching on to The Apotheosis of Death is surprisingly easy for a record with such a complicated name. The riffs have a wonderful chunkiness to them which makes The Apotheosis of Death sound vital and tasty in spin after spin. Add in growls that are occasionally frighteningly brutal (like in the beginning of Blade of Brutus) and you start to realize how exciting the Exordium Mors sound can be.
So, I sit here, typing this off at the end of my workday, and what message does it ultimately have for me? I can't say I'm 100% sure. But I do know that the wonderous escapism of these tracks has allowed me at least to stand tall, giving me motivation to power through a dull weekday. Exordium Mors are skilled in the art of songcraft, and listening to them develop will be an exciting prospect. As for now, what can I do other than feel the grooves and find myself in thrall to a record that has the potential to provoke circle pits the world over.
