Cretin - Stranger

One of the most hotly anticipated albums of 2014, Cretin had a lot to live up too. Their sole previous release came out eight years ago and everybody has been wondering if they'd be able to match the old stuff. I am proud to say that with Stranger Cretin have actually gone above and beyond what I thought possible, putting out what is quite probably the best grindcore record of the year. With blazing rhythms and demonic vocals, Cretin have proved that they are still relevant, creating true grind that will crush your skull in.

There is a delicious sense of destruction that permeates this record. The vocals are harsh and filled with an impressive and demonic energy. The guitar parts blast their way into your heart and are a lot easier to get into than you might think. Cretin wear their influences on their collective sleeve. The sounds of Napalm Death, Repulsion, and even early Death shine through and show that Cretin are crafting songs that will immediately drive into your gut, bringing you to the ground like a suckerpunch. These songs will, to paraphrase Metalsucks, not only fuck your face off, but also fuck your torso off.

Simply put, this is the best grindcore record of the year. Purists rejoice, the masters are back, proving that their is still a lot to be said in the music. Sure the songs are a bit longer and the tracks groovier, but that's what makes them great. Cretin are not going to stop because they have an unholy energy that most only dream of. These riffs will inspire pits across the globe, I think that now that Cretin have released a stellar sophomore release they can truly enter the metal pantheon. Incredibly addictive and ridiculously heavy, prepare yourself for the end of all things, Stranger is here to take your soul.
