Void Paradigm - Earth's Disease
Void Paradigm hails all the way from France and here
they give us their second full length, “Earth’s Disease”. They have lyrical
themes based on the Universe, the Void, Emptiness, and Philosophy. The band
dubs their style as, “hypnotic dodecatonic black metal”. Dodecaphony, also
known as twelve-tone technique, is a method of musical composition devised by
Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, The technique is a means of ensuring all
twelve notes of the chromatic scale are sounded as often as one another in a
piece of music while preventing the emphasis of any one note through the use of
tone rows, ordering of the twelve pitch classes. All twelve notes are thus
given more or less equal importance, and the music avoids being in a key. After
reading some back ground or the word Dodecaphony, the approach Void Paradigm
takes, ultimately makes more sense.
Can you imagine a black metal version of Dysrhythmia? In
theory you might of thought about this considering how amazing Colin Martson in
his black metal project Krallice. Or maybe a black metal version of Burnt By
the Sun. Honestly though I never thought of the idea until I heard, “Earth’s
Disease”. The entire record is extremely solid and quite excellent at times.
Overall the forte of this project is their ability to use dissonance in a more
proper way. It might be dissonant throughout, although the song structure is
still cohesive and they inter-mix some great melodies as well. I also feel a
slight old-school hardcore influence mixed with some jazz. The drummer
amplifies the jazzy vibe with his amazing use of syncopation and his incredible
/ creative fills. The vocals are another major highlight. At times the distress
in his voice reminds me of Mikko Aspa from Clandenstine Blaze. He has very
powerful vocals with a spectacular raw quality. It almost feels as if the
vocalist is burning alive. All in all this man captures agony to the core and
remains steadfast throughout the album.
Fantastic song writing with unique progressions on all
instruments. This record is consistent and stays fresh throughout the entire
listening experience. This is a gem in their discography and this also stirs my
excitement for the next release. If you like more avante garde styles of music
then Void Paradigm are for you. WE ARE EARTH’S DISEASE.
