Ahab - The Boats of Glen Carrig

I'll admit that I don't know much about Ahab. I saw a few minutes of their set at Hellfest, but that's about it. That being said, I regret not having previously investigated what this band is all about, because they are the real fucking deal. Ahab understand what it means to craft crushingly heavy doom metal, fusing cleans and growls into an organic whole and leaving the listener enlightened by the end of even the first listen The Boats of Glen Carrig is the kind of triumphant esoteric doom record the twenty first century needs.

One of the things that helps to keep The Boats of Glen Carrig so deeply enjoyable for me is the bands ability to have seemingly non stop forward motion. This is never a record that stagnates, but rather one that seems to be falling forward until suddenly you get a moment of drama when everything changes and you are sent back to square one. Ahab are nothing if not talented and dynamic songwriters, crafting tracks that cover a wealth of human emotion and leave you smiling, covered in blood, and realizing that there is indeed a way forward, despite the eternal madness that might define your day to day existence.

And so we beat on, boats against the current, or so I imagine the titular boats to be. In a world of shit, Ahab provide something strangely beautiful that guides you forward and shows the ephemeral might that doom metal can have. The Boats of Glen Carrig is a doom metal masterpiece and carries a note of triumph with it Every moment that you dig deeper into this record is a moment well spent, and when you are so charmed with something what else can you do but share it with your friends, and honor the power of this release?
