Hooded Menace - Darkness Drips Forth

Hooded Menace have made a name for themselves as some of the darkest and most wonderfully fucked up purveyors of death-doom on the scene today. Bombastic, bleak, and unafraid to face the terrifying nihilism of existence there is something strangely cleansing about their latest release, the indomitable Darkness Drips Forth. From the ominous bell toll that starts the record to the eerie acoustic that close it out this is Hooded Menace at their finest - crafting tunes that terrify and resonate with the listener.

It's hard to deny the inherent magic of what Hooded Menace do. These guys have simply mastered the creepy riff -- that weird fill that sets your hair on edge and the strange melodic line that gives you goosebumps. This is a band that know exactly what it means to terrify the listener and unlike almost all of their peers they can quite easily stimulate a very visceral response, even in the most jaded metalhead. That's a huge part of what makes Hooded Menace so crucial to the scene - in a world of death-metal-by-numbers these guys are pushing the boundaries and creating truly fucked up and evil sounds that are impossible to ignore.

Simply put Darkness Drips Forth is one of the best composed metal albums of the year. It represents an enormous travail that will leave you guessing and wondering what else is to come from these death metal stalwarts. Bringing in touches of what feels like jazz to accentuate brutal growls and demented song structures Hooded Menace can't help but garner the interest of fans of heavy music. These guys are doing something rather different and pushing all of the boundaries - that being said - I get the impression these guys have only just started to unveil what they are truly capable of.
