The Sickening

Sickness Unfold cover art

There is a certain perverse charm to underground Norwegian death metal. As you feel the stench of the basement in your nostrils and revel in the underproduced bass drum assault you find yourself strangely clean - as if something this demented has provided a way forward. The sublime darkness of a band like The Sickening is a prime example of this, a band who, on their new record Sickness Unfold unleash ten tracks (including a Vile cover!) of sonic decimation. Songs like Throat Hole Ejaculation and Power Tool Sodomy are reminiscent of an older time, even if elements of the riffing definitely seem to be borrowing from new school death metal ideas. The Sickening understand the primal beauty of death metal, despite their stripped down sound and fucked up lyrics. Simply put - if you like everything that is old school, brutal, and evil you will fall in love, and if not, you might as well turn around and go home.
