Cirith Gorgor - Visions Of Exalted Lucifer

It's been far too long since I'v covered a black metal record that I would describe as gloriously satanic - but Visions Of Exalted Lucifer, the latest from Cirith Gorgor is exactly that. With wondrously harsh vocals and blazing frostbitten riffs Cirith Goror have added another fitting chapter to their legacy of torment and put together a release that any black metal fan will be able to get in too. Bombastic, bleak and wonderfully grim there is a certain magical sense of liberation to Visions Of Exalted Lucifer that lets it merit many a spin.

The atavistic tendencies of the band make sense - after all, though the lineup has totally changed since its demo days Cirith Gorgor has always been known for making music that allies itself closely with legends like Gorgoroth and Taake. But part of what makes Visions Of Exalted Lucifer stand out is the sense of authenticity it grants us. You find yourself digging into rich soundscapes that use monochromatic ideas to shape brave new worlds. Toss in a touch of Immortal's inherent melodrama here and there and you get a record that really gets to the spirit of the underground and will force you to raise your horns to the sky.

In this modern day and age few bands are as gleefully satanic as Cirith Gorgor, and that helps to establish them as more that just an anomaly, but a brave last bastion. As one delves deeper into Visions Of Exalted Lucifer one gets a sense that the dudes in this band hold onto satanism not just for themselves but for the whole of black metal. Weirdly addictive and at times over the top Cirith Gorgor are not a band to be trigled with and watching them come back from the dead will be a true pleasure.
