Rorcal - Creon

I remember when I got Rorcal's 2013 release Vilavege it was on a blank CD just labeled "Rorcal" and with a photo printed attached - a photo that freaked me out. It's one of the only times I've legitimately been a little disturbed by a promo. I was blown away by the music too and now that the band is back with Creon their most potent release to date I think it's time that we collectively admit - not only are Rorcal the shit - but they may very well be the dominant doom metal force in 2016. Despite the crowded scene they shine beyond and give us hope for the future.

The thing about this band that always gets me is how perfectly they fuse various distinctly evil aspects of their sound. The black metal ferocity that introduces the opening track, Polynices is only a sort of appetizer for some of the more demented stuff to come later on. And while Creon certainly feels a little less demented than Vilavege I think that's merely because Rorcal have moved on to different pastures. Their sound has become more powerful with Creon, exciting new sounds are explored and on occasion the band becomes almost atmospheric - certainly a step forward from previous, more stripped down (But still awesome) work.

So yeah - Rorcal isn't really for the faint of heart, if you're not ready to commit a lot of time to some truly fucked up underground metal then this band isn't for you - and that's fine, Rorcal has a super angular approach after all and I'm sure they are aware of that. That being said - Creon takes their compositions a step beyond and proves to me at least, that Rorcal is a band who deserve international acclaim. Few bands can invoke the darkness that Rorcal so easily harness and if you're not ready for these harbingers of doom they will simply storm over you.
