Family - Future History

There is a very specific breed of 'Brooklyn sound' that has started to dominate the metal scene of
late. I'm not exactly sure how to define it, but I know it when I hear it, and Family, with their latest offering Future History certainly have. With a potent prog metal sound infused with oodles of sludge these guys live up to the promise of the Brooklyn metal scene and have you coming back time and time again for an album that not only captures the imagination but expands on one of our foundational genres.

The thing that gets me about Family is their ability to seamlessly fuse genres. Though yes the two primary aspects of their sound are prog and sludge they have managed to build in a healthy dose of classic rock, amongst other things. It shows their inherent musicality. The way that they seamlessly execute across a broad swathe of sound forces you to come back time and time again just because there is so much to discover here. Future History is exactly that - a document defining the future of one of musics most fascinating genres. Family have pulled the entire thing forward - and it's hard to ignore them.

It's easy to fall in love with the bands spiraling riffs and their unique songwriting sensibility. Powerful death roars are contrasted with delicate clean vocals and the bands overall sense of forward motion circles back time and time again to show us a forward thinking take on what has historically been a very forward thinking genre. Future History plays by a lot of the traditional rules, but the guys in the band clearly have a far greater understanding of the music making for a better, more freaked out tomorrow.
