Disgusted Geist - Demo

Longtime readers may be aware of my low key obsession with the band Bloodmoon. While it's been a while since we've heard from those doom lords (Though I expect to get some buzzing this year) their frontman has another band, Disgusted Geist, a twisted fucking death metal act whose recent demo is a classic, reminiscent of countless dungeon dwelling peers and stirring up an underground resistance of the sort that many of the kids in our scene today have forgotten even exists. This is a death metal demo for the nihilistic age.

There's not a whole lot to pick apart here given that the record is after all a dungeon quality demo but there is something strangely endearing about the uber guttural vocals and the trudging destruction of the guitars. The death doom magic of the closing track, Let It Rot is perhaps the best example of Disgusted Geist's blasphemous power. It's easy for death metal dorks like me to get lost in the madness here. And yet Disgusted Geist is far more than just a stripped down death metal band. The songwriting here is wonderfully solid and the sense of internal torment behind the playing is magical. There is something strangely warm about the music, perhaps it's the guitar tone, that embraces you and leaves the listener utterly in love.

It's been a while since I've really dove into a demo like this one, but I'm glad I did. Disgusted Geist understand the driving polemic behind this sort of music and their sludgy violations of all that is sacred are addictive. In many ways the fact that a band native to a beautiful area like San Luis Obispo could be such a fucked up behemoth, but such is life in the age of strife, and such is the primitive destruction of a once sacred age. This is a demo that hints at greater things to come and reminds us that only death doom is real.
