Unearthly
Trance are the sort of metal band who seem uniquely suited for the
modern scene - even if they have far reaching roots. These New York
City sludge metallers have created something utterly majestic,
titanic in scale but also very human. Their sixth (!)
offering, Stalking The Ghost is an absolute monster.
The forward crush and devastating power of the guitar riffs is
utterly fascinating and represents a band who can't help but to
impress. The tortured magic of Unearthly Trance will capture your
imagination and leave you in an unearthly trance of your own.
I've
grown to love metals recent tendency for mesmerizing sounds. It means
that when you come to a record like this one, that fuels itself with
a sound that often feels like a fusion of Yob and Neurosis you can
turn on, tune in, and eventually, drop out. The soundscapes here are
vast and they give you a lot of opportunities to sit down and really
try and dissect all that it represents. Every riff here sounds
absolutely colossal. As you find yourself wrapped up in the perpetual
forward motion of Stalking The Ghost it becomes
almost shocking when you collapse into the beautiful and climactic
noise that defines the closing track.
Dipping
out and letting this album wash over to you is the exact sort of
panacea you need at the end of a long day. This is an album that
drives forward with every new song and which leaves you eager to
continue uncovering the exciting offerings that lie within. In a
world here post metal is starting to push into the genres mainstream
Unearthly Trance seem like a proud forefather of a noble tradition
and one who will smash your motherfucking face in.
