Xibalba - Diablo, Con Amor... Adios

So they're back, the Pomona based Southern Lord signees, the hardcore masters, the hardcore lords, perhaps the heaviest group of their kind... maybe ever. Motherfucking Xibalba. Their latest offering, though a mere three songs is ten minutes of some of the most punishing music of their careers. Diablo, Con Amor... Adios is hardcore the way it was meant to be done, with touches of death metal running across the fringes and pummeling grooves tearing into your guts for track after track. Xibalba prove once again that they are the masters of their craft.

It's hard to find a hardcore record these days that you can really sink your teeth into, there is a very real meatiness to the guitar tones and a crush behind the songwriting that makes it hard not to fall in love with what Xibalba have done here. The thing is the band has moved past mosh anthems or heaviness for the sake of heaviness. Instead they have transcended the common limitations of the genre and tear out our throats with breakdowns that simply crack your skull open. Diablo, Con Amor... Adios is an album that takes the sludgy grooves and thrashy roots of the genre but pushes it to exciting new extremes.

Diablo, Con Amor... Adios is not necessarily revolutionizing hardcore, but it certainly is pushing the envelope. Xibalba are the sort of hardcore band that are going to crush you into oblivion and remind you time and time again that you don't really know what heavy is. A band who push you over the edge and then hold you back by your manky hair. There is something tortured and utterly devastating about this band, something that tears your teeth out one by one and leaves your cracked skull devastated in the wake of yet another devastating breakdown.
