Couch Slut - Contempt

Couch Slut is hands down one of my favorite Brooklyn bands going these days. They have this strange and overwhelming sense of righteous anger mixed with noisy triumph, potent songwriting and then every once in a while a few moments of sheer beauty. It's the kind of thing that you can't help but to want to dig deep into. Contempt is more than just another avant garde black metally sounding record on Gilead Media. It is instead a potent statement and a guide to everyone seeking to live different and create a better world for this music to thrive in.

I think that Contempt is fascinating to me, not just because I see the lead singer all the time at our favorite bars, but rather that it's a record that lives and breathes in a very different way to many of its peers. The bands trademark crunch simultaneously hints at hardcore and black metal. Megan Osztrosits' stunning vocals delve across all sides of the extreme music genre. Normally I am loathe to compare bands to what their press material suggests, but in this case I gotta say - Oxbow is one of very few musical references that we can use for Contempt. This album is simply so out there, forcing you to question your very place in the scene.

The overall sense of chaos that defines Contempt can't help but to be entrancing and the way that it is driven forth by the supreme hatred of this band only furthers the inherent magic of the group. In a world where so many are disenfranchised and cast aside Couch Slut is the music of liberation and equality. This is music that stays true to the origins of punk rock, challenging expectations lyrically as much as it does musically. Rather than falling into the same old trends, Couch Slut continue to break new ground.
