Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Finisterre

Der Weg Einer Freiheit are one of my favorite black metal bands on the scene right now. In the musical tradition of their peers in bands like Downfall of Gaia the groups unique ability to blend beauty with transcendent black metal is on full display on their new record, Finisterre, or in English, "The End Of The Earth". An album that simultaneously sees some of Der Weg Einer Freiheit's prettiest moments as much as its darkest Finisterre is an absolute stunner, resonating across the sky and into my heart.

The power of Finisterre lies in its ability to deal in polar opposites. As much as the band might be aping Alcest with some of their rising passages and fuller orchestrations they also aren't afraid to show us some of the more stripped down beauty behind the music. The drum sound in particular is especially raw on this album, it couches the entire thing in a much more old school sound than it might otherwise have been and this really adds to the depth of the record. There is a sense throughout of the enormity of the travail that this record represents and the groups unflinching dedication to pushing boundaries only serves to make this more fascinating.

A band who seem to only get better with time aas they continue to delve their own path in the world of complex post black metal Der Weg Einer Freiheit have very much found their own path to freedom with Finisterre. While the band clearly still hasn't realized their end vision this record is a huge step in the right direction and it reminds us time and time again simply how great that Der Weg Einer Freiheit can be. There is something endlessly mesmerizing about this release and I can't help but to keep coming back.
