Throane - Plus Une Main A Mordre

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Debemur Morti is one of the best black metal labels in the world right now. Their latest offering, Plus Une Main A Mordre from the almighty Throane is six tracks of truly punishing French black metal. In a genre that is these days so often defined by prettiness or experimental dalliances, Throane come at you with burning rage and a sensibility reminiscent of bands like Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, fucked up, over the top, and very aware of the nihilism of existence.

In many ways the new French scene is an extension of their philosophers of yesteryear. There are many of the same ideologies and the sense of torment is prevalent in both, it's rather striking but also important to document these twisted realities. Just as important though. Plus Une Main A Mordre feels like a huge step up for Throane. While last years Derriere-Nouse La Lumiere was a truly excellent record this album is a growth upon those themes. It shows us a band pushing boundaries and finding their freedom in potent lessons, exciting compositions and dynamic steps towards becoming genre leaders.

It's easy to get lost in the magic of Plus Une Main A Mordre. It's an album that creates an overwhelming and psychopathic presence upon the listener. It paints a demented picture and demands you to smile for it. The production is truly top notch and the songwriting stellar. It hints at a brave new world for one of metals most important and exciting bands. Sure it's not super accessible and sure there are a lot of elements that are downright alienating, but that's exactly why I love it and want to spend more time with it, now and forever.
