When a dude came up to me at a show at Lucky 13's while I was hammered to tell me about how he liked my radio show I did not expect him to put out one of my favorite doom records of the year. But here we are. The world is a beautiful place and I am no longer afraid to die. Or some bullshit. The point being - Witchkiss have done something really cool with their Argonauta Records debut, The Austere Curtains Of Our Eyes. While the album may still be a bit rough aroudn the edges it hints at an impressive maturity from the Hudson Valley crushers.
What gets me with this record is that though Witchkiss are merely a three piece they conjure up all manner of sounds. Not only that but there unique balance of powerful male growls with esoteric female cleans is powerful and at times even tear jerking. Witchkiss are on a different level from most of their nascent peers in the scene. For a young band they have been able to come out hard and fast with clear and unique ideas that hint at a band who continually improve and bring a lot to the table. The quality of the songwriting here is stellar with nothing dragging on too long. What I would like to hear though is more implementation of the skilled diversity of their sound. What I'm trying to say is that the songs that take full advantage of their potential, like Blind Faith are absolute motherfuckers and it's impossible to turn away from them.
What I love about this scene is how you periodically stumble upon bands that have an absurd amount of talent that they are bringing to the table. You find bands like Witchkiss who can perfectly balance dark and light, who understand their strengths and play into them. Again, they do still need some polishing, but there is incredible skill here. The execution is thrilling and I am very curious to see how the group evolves as their cohesiveness expands. They have the potential to be a truly unique force, let's see them embrace it.
